How To Make Your Own Ceremonial Cacao

In this article, you will learn the basics of how to make your own Ceremonial Cacao and begin your journey to holding simple Cacao ceremonies for yourself. The first and most important aspect of this process is making sure you are using the best quality Cacao you can find. We have compiled the very best sources from around the world which you can find in our ceremony shop!

There are a lot of different herbs and spices that compliment the Cacao really nicely; it can be so fun to play around and experiment with the ones that speak to you. When meditating with cacao, however, it is best to keep your recipe simple as each ingredient you add will affect the way the Cacao is processed in your body.

Additional to the Cacao, my ceremonial recipe includes:

Warming Cinnamon which improves circulation, aids digestions and helps increase the absorption of the Cacao.

Cayenne pepper, which stimulates the circulatory system and speeds up the absorption process. Traditionally Cacao was made with a lot of spice ~ it tastes amazing but also really increases the potency, so try to go easy if you’re just starting out.

Every now and again I will add honey for taste, but if you can handle it unsweetened then try it without, particularly in ceremonial settings. Cacao is, however, very much about pleasure and sensuality, so sometimes I can’t go past a little sweetness to make the whole process a really beautiful, delectable one. Just go with your instinct.

Okay so here is the exact recipe I use! You will need a large knife and a blender.

  • 42 grams (roughly 3 tablespoons) of Ceremonial Cacao
  • 1 cup of boiling Water
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Cinnamon
  • Pinch of Cayenne pepper
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Optional 1 teaspoon of Honey or Agave

Method:

  • Shave the Cacao from the block as finely as you can, if you have a high-speed blender you can turn it into a powder. The smoother the better!
  • Boil your water and add it to the blender with your Cacao
  • Add all other ingredients and blend! So easy!

Some people prefer to just use a stovetop and melt the Cacao down on a very low heat. This is lovely, however, it takes a lot more time. When I’m making my morning Cacao, it’s easier for me to just place everything in the blender and it’s done.

For a group ceremony, I will put it on the stove after blending, as this helps it to thicken up and gives me time to bless and sing to the Cacao. It might sound a bit strange but you can really taste and feel the difference when it’s made with love!

When you’re ready to drink, it is so important to take a moment to set an intention for the Cacao and drink mindfully.

This can be a specific question or can be as simple as ‘Please tell me what it is I need to know.’ I always find that if I sit and meditate with Cacao in the morning, it helps me to get really clear about what I need to focus on that day and how to prioritise my time. It really stimulates your productivity and makes for a great coffee alternative (even if you are a daily coffee drinker I guarantee you won’t even miss it after a strong dose of Cacao!)

It is also important to remember that this is a medicine and not to underestimate its power. Cacao works differently for everyone; for some people, it is very mild and for others, incredibly deep.

Be mindful that it may move things around both physically and emotionally. Be gentle with yourself and take the time to check in with your body, allowing yourself to be still and rest if you need. Another important thing to remember is to drink plenty of water before and after. Due to the high dosage of Cacao, it can be quite intense on the kidneys.
